WhatsApp Business API Pricing in India (2026): Per-Message Rates & How to Pay Less
Meta now charges per template message, not per conversation, and replies to customers are free. Here are the 2026 India rates, what's free, a worked monthly bill, and five ways to pay less.

Most guides to WhatsApp Business API pricing in India still describe a model Meta retired. Since 1 July 2025, Meta no longer charges per 24-hour conversation. It charges per delivered template message, and a large share of what a business sends is now free. This guide explains how the current model works, walks through a real monthly bill, and shows how to keep that bill small.

What changed, and when
- November 2024: Meta made service conversations — the ones your customer starts — free. The old "1,000 free service conversations a month" allowance ended at the same time, because it was no longer needed.
- 1 July 2025: conversation-based pricing ended. Each template message is now charged individually when it is delivered, at the rate for its category.
- 1 January 2026: businesses in India can be billed by Meta in rupees. Eligible accounts have to move to INR billing by 31 December 2026.
If a guide mentions "per conversation" rates or a free tier of 1,000 conversations, it was written before these changes.
The three paid categories
Every template you send falls into one of three categories. As of September 2026, Meta's India rates are:
- Marketing — about ₹0.86 per message. Offers, launches, newsletters, festive broadcasts and win-back messages. Charged on every delivery, with no free window.
- Utility — about ₹0.12 per message. Order confirmations, shipping updates, payment receipts and appointment reminders. Free when sent inside an open 24-hour customer service window.
- Authentication — about ₹0.12 per message. One-time passwords and login codes.
Rates change from time to time, so check the pricing page before you set a budget. It always shows the current figures.
What is free
- Replies to your customers. When a customer messages you, a 24-hour window opens. Everything you send back in that window that isn't a template — text, images, documents, buttons, lists — is free.
- Utility templates inside that window. An order update sent while the customer's window is open costs nothing.
- Conversations that start from an ad. When someone reaches you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button, every message for the next 72 hours is free.
For most support-led businesses, the entire support side of WhatsApp now costs nothing.
A worked example
A D2C brand in a typical month:
- 2,000 marketing broadcasts: 2,000 × ₹0.8631 = ₹1,726.20
- 5,000 order and shipping updates, of which 2,000 go out while the customer's window is open. Only 3,000 are charged: 3,000 × ₹0.115 = ₹345.00
- 500 login OTPs: 500 × ₹0.115 = ₹57.50
- 1,500 support chats answered by the team or a chatbot: free
Total paid to Meta: about ₹2,129 for the month. Under the old model, the same month would also have paid for every support conversation beyond the first thousand, and for each order update regardless of timing.
Five ways to pay less
- Send updates while the window is open. If a customer has just messaged you, send the order or delivery update then rather than hours later. It's free inside the window.
- Pick the right category. A delivery update submitted as a marketing template costs about seven times more. Keep promotional wording out of utility templates, or Meta will reclassify them as marketing.
- Target marketing broadcasts. Marketing is the only category with no free path. Sending to an engaged segment instead of your whole list cuts the biggest line on the bill.
- Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads for acquisition. The 72-hour free window lets a chatbot qualify and convert a lead without any per-message charge.
- Let customers start the conversation. A "message us on WhatsApp" button on your website, invoices and packaging opens free service windows you can use for updates.
Two bills, not one
Meta's message charges and your platform subscription are separate. Meta bills for the messages through your WhatsApp Business Account. Your platform — MotherBot or any other — charges for the software on top: the shared inbox, chatbots, broadcasts, CRM and analytics. MotherBot passes Meta's charges through at cost and has a free-forever plan; see plans and pricing.
WhatsApp calls
Customers can call your business on WhatsApp for free. Calls your business makes are billed per minute. The current rate is on the WhatsApp pricing page.
Estimate your own bill
The calculator on our WhatsApp pricing page takes your monthly marketing, utility and authentication volumes and shows what Meta will charge, including how much you save by sending utility messages inside the 24-hour window.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in India?
Meta charges per delivered template message. As of September 2026 the India rates are about ₹0.86 for a marketing message and about ₹0.12 for a utility or authentication message. Replies to a customer inside the 24-hour window are free, and so are utility templates sent while that window is open.
Is WhatsApp Business free?
The WhatsApp Business app is free. The WhatsApp Business API has no monthly fee from Meta, but template messages are charged individually. Your platform subscription is separate.
Does WhatsApp still charge per conversation?
No. Meta replaced per-conversation pricing with per-message pricing on 1 July 2025. Guides that quote conversation rates or a 1,000-free-conversation allowance are out of date.
Which WhatsApp messages are free?
Non-template replies inside the 24-hour customer service window, utility templates sent while that window is open, and every message in the 72-hour window that opens when someone contacts you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad.
How can I reduce my WhatsApp bill?
Send order and delivery updates while the customer's window is open, keep promotional wording out of utility templates so they aren't reclassified as marketing, and send marketing broadcasts to an engaged segment rather than your whole list.
