WhatsApp Green Tick in 2026: How Verification Actually Works
The green tick is now a blue checkmark, it's free, and nobody can sell it to you. The real eligibility criteria for an Official Business Account, how to apply, and what to do if you're rejected.
Every business that gets onto the WhatsApp Business API asks the same question within a week: how do we get the green tick?
Two things are worth knowing before you start. The badge is now a blue checkmark, not a green one, and no agency can sell it to you. It is granted by Meta against fixed criteria, and anyone promising a guaranteed tick for a fee is selling something they don't control.
This guide covers what the badge actually is, who qualifies, how to apply, and what to do when you're turned down.
What the badge really is
A number with the badge is an Official Business Account (OBA). The checkmark appears beside the business name in the chat and in the contact view, telling the customer that Meta has confirmed this is the business it claims to be.
What it does not do:
- It doesn't raise your messaging limits. Those come from your messaging tier.
- It doesn't reduce your message costs.
- It doesn't unlock features. Templates, chatbots and broadcasts work without it.
- It isn't required to use the WhatsApp Business API.
What it does do is improve discoverability and remove hesitation. When you message someone who doesn't have you saved, a verified name reads as legitimate in a way an unknown number never does.
Green tick, blue tick, Meta Verified
Three different things get mixed up constantly:
| What it is | How you get it | |
|---|---|---|
| Official Business Account | The checkmark beside your business name on WhatsApp | Requested in WhatsApp Manager, granted by Meta against the criteria below. No fee. |
| Business verification | Meta confirming your company is a real registered business | Documents submitted in Meta Business Manager. A prerequisite for OBA. |
| Meta Verified | A paid monthly subscription bundling a verified badge and support | Subscribed through Meta. Separate from OBA. |
The badge was green historically, which is why the phrase stuck in India. Meta now shows a blue checkmark.
The eligibility criteria
Meta grants OBA status when all of these are true:
- Your business portfolio is verified through Meta's Business Verification.
- The number has been on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days.
- Two-step verification is enabled on the business phone number.
- The display name is approved.
- You comply with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy.
Meta does not grant OBA to employee numbers, test accounts, or numbers on the WhatsApp Business app. It is for API numbers only.
Beyond the checklist, Meta also weighs how well known the business is โ coverage in news sources and a real public presence help. This is the part nobody can guarantee, and the usual reason a business that meets every requirement still gets turned down.
Get your display name right first
A rejected display name blocks everything else, and this is where most applications stall.
- The name must match your real business name, or the name customers know you by.
- It must relate to the business linked to the account.
- Generic words alone don't pass. "Best Deals" or "Customer Support" will be rejected.
- Don't include your phone number, a URL, emoji, or words like "Official" or "Verified".
- If your legal entity name differs from your brand, make sure the brand is visible on your website, app store listings and social profiles.
How to apply, step by step
- Complete Business Verification in Meta Business Manager. Submit your registration certificate, GST certificate or utility bill, with the business name, address and phone matching everywhere. Mismatched documents are the most common failure.
- Wait until the number is 30 days old on the platform. Use those 30 days properly: send real, wanted messages and build a healthy quality rating.
- Enable two-step verification on the number.
- Get the display name approved.
- Submit the request in WhatsApp Manager: open Account tools โ Phone numbers, choose the number, then Profile โ Official business account โ Submit Request.
- Wait for the decision. Meta notifies you either way.
If you're rejected
You must wait 30 days before submitting a new request. Use the time rather than reapplying blindly:
- Strengthen your public presence. A working website with your business name and the number, active social profiles, a Google Business Profile, and press coverage if you can get it.
- Improve your quality rating. A number sitting at medium or low quality undermines the application. Message only people who asked to hear from you.
- Check consistency. The same business name, address and phone number across your website, Business Manager and your documents.
- Grow real usage. A number with genuine two-way conversations reads very differently from one that only broadcasts.
What actually moves the needle
Businesses that get approved tend to have three things: a verified business portfolio with clean documents, a number that has been used for real conversations for months at a healthy quality rating, and a public presence that makes the brand easy to confirm. The badge follows an established business; it doesn't create one.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get the green tick on WhatsApp Business?
Request Official Business Account status in WhatsApp Manager. You need a verified business portfolio, a number on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days, two-step verification enabled, and an approved display name. The badge Meta grants today is a blue checkmark.
Is the WhatsApp green tick free?
Yes. Meta charges nothing for Official Business Account status, and it cannot be bought. Meta Verified is a separate paid subscription.
Why was my WhatsApp green tick request rejected?
Usually because the business isn't sufficiently well known publicly, business verification documents don't match, the display name wasn't approved, or the number's quality rating is poor. You can reapply after 30 days.
How long does WhatsApp verification take?
Business verification usually takes a few days once documents are submitted. The OBA request itself is reviewed by Meta with no published turnaround, and the number must already be 30 days old on the platform.
Do I need the green tick to send bulk WhatsApp messages?
No. Broadcasts, templates and chatbots all work without it. Your sending volume is set by your messaging tier, not by the badge.
Can I get the badge on the WhatsApp Business app?
No. Official Business Account status is only granted to numbers on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API).
